ASSISTED LIVING

healthcare design - 2022

This project explores the design of an assisted living facility in Austin, Texas, developed as part of a healthcare design studio. A key component of the early design process involved a detailed site mapping exercise to determine the most appropriate location within the city.

The axonometric map layers demographic data from the U.S. Census Bureau to help visualize population trends and needs across the city. The two maps below further explore Austin’s existing resources, with the map on the left drawing attention to existing assisted living facilities in the city and the map on the right indicating the proposed location for this project, as well as surrounding interstates. Watershed and water bodies are also identified, aligning with the project's core concept: fostering wellness for older adults through meaningful connections to nature.

The Casitas at Colony Park is envisioned as a culturally responsive assisted living community serving East Austin’s Latino population, which makes up approximately 60% of the neighborhood. Rooted in the values of community, choice, and sustainability, the design emphasizes familiar materials, flexible spaces, and opportunities for personal expression - creating a true sense of home for its residents.
