THE CROSSINGS
multifamily housing - undergraduate thesis - 2023
This project is a proposal for an adaptive reuse of Wonderland Mall, a two-story 600,000 square foot indoor
shopping mall originally opened in the 1960s in Balcones Heights, Texas. Once an economic and cultural staple of the small city, the mall is now over 60% vacant and city officials are in the midst of devising a plan for Wonderland’s future, one of the primary goals of which will be to un-brand it as a mall. The intent behind this project was to create a detailed proposal of what amenities and facilities may occupy the building in its next iteration based on a site and population analysis and extensive research and case studies. The proposed reuse, referred to as The Crossings, will be a mixed-use facility including supportive housing, healthcare facilities, retail and dining, government offices, community spaces, and ample outdoor area. The Crossings will not only offer a self-contained live, work, play community within the city, but will also activate and revitalize the surrounding area by providing opportunities for economic growth and future development. Additionally, special attention to design details and architectural elements will ensure the preservation of notable historic elements of the mall, carrying them over into a modern use.
